The Football Association of Ireland’s (FAI) Late Night League programme continues to make a significant impact within communities, thanks to the steadfast support of IPB Insurance in collaboration with Local Authorities and An Garda Síochána.
Recently showcased at an event in O’Connell’s Secondary School, Dublin 1, the initiative highlights the power of football in promoting social inclusion, strengthening community ties, and steering young people away from crime and anti-social behaviour. Through sport, the Late Night League fosters a sense of belonging, encourages teamwork, and promotes mental well-being among participants.
Football, a sport for all, serves as a vital tool in engaging young people in meaningful activities. The Late Night League not only offers a chance to develop sporting skills but also provides a positive outlet for young individuals, reinforcing values of respect, discipline, and camaraderie. By fostering inclusion and promoting mental health benefits, the programme plays a crucial role in youth development.
The scheme’s success is largely attributed to the dedication of Local Authorities, FAI Development Officers, and An Garda Síochána. It offers a safe and structured environment where local Gardaí can engage with young people early, building trust and positive relationships within the community.
FAI Head of Grassroots, Nigel Keady, commended the collective efforts behind the programme: “The Late Night Leagues are an integral part of giving back to local communities and giving youths a focus. The scheme wouldn’t be possible without the support of the local Garda and the Local Authorities, as we use football as a vehicle for positive community engagement and bringing people together in areas that benefit most from that.”
John Hogan, Chair of IPB Insurance, also emphasised the programme’s role in strengthening community relations: “As a mutual insurer, we are delighted to partner with our Local Authority members in supporting An Garda Síochána and the FAI in delivering the Late Night Leagues, an important initiative in promoting social inclusion. This programme provides young people with a safe and positive environment to express themselves through sport, building strong relationships with their peers and local Gardaí. The success of the Late Night Leagues highlights the importance of collaboration. By fostering informal communication between young people and Gardaí, it helps build trust, mutual understanding, and safer neighbourhoods.”
With the continued commitment of all stakeholders involved, the Late Night League programme is set to expand its reach and further its positive influence within communities across Ireland. As football continues to unite people of all backgrounds, initiatives like these demonstrate the sport’s potential to drive social change and build stronger, safer communities.
